West Virginia National Guard army stay on duty in Washington

(MENAFN) None of the National Guard members from West Virginia deployed to Washington, D.C. have requested to leave following a deadly shooting that claimed the life of one soldier and critically injured another, according to reports.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey told local media, “I haven't heard of anyone (wanting to) step back. They wanted to stay. They wanted to complete the mission and serve their state and country.”

The troops had been sent to the U.S. capital at President Donald Trump’s request in August, intended to support crime reduction efforts. City officials later argued that the deployment was unnecessary given declining crime rates. Between 300 and 400 West Virginia National Guard members were initially deployed, with 180 remaining on duty as of Friday, according to the Joint Task Force, District of Columbia.

Morrisey declined to comment on whether West Virginia would contribute to an additional 500 troops ordered to the capital after the shooting, stating, “Right now, I'm focusing on the families, the guardsmen, and healing.”

The attack resulted in the death of 20-year-old Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and critically injured 24-year-old Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, both members of the West Virginia National Guard. Morrisey described Beckstrom as someone who “brought positive energy to every room” and said Wolfe “comes from a rich tradition of service.”

Reports indicate that a third guard member stabbed the 29-year-old suspect, an Afghan national legally residing in the U.S., while a fourth returned fire, ending the attack. President Trump said the suspect remains hospitalized in serious condition.
