UK Challenges EU Plan to Cut Tariff-Free Steel Imports

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom is preparing to challenge European Union plans to significantly reduce tariff-free steel imports, amid warnings from British manufacturers that the move could seriously harm the sector, according to reports.

UK Business Secretary Peter Kyle is expected to raise the issue in talks with EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič during discussions in Brussels on Friday.

The dispute comes after the EU proposed changes to its steel safeguard framework, which would sharply cut tariff-free import quotas for non-EU countries starting July 1.

British steel producers have warned that the proposed changes could have a “devastating” impact on the industry, arguing that they would significantly restrict access to a key export market.

Under the plan, total tariff-free steel imports from non-EU countries would be reduced by around 47% compared with 2024 levels, marking a substantial tightening of trade conditions.
