Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Municipality is accelerating its nationwide park development plan as part of its commitment to Qatar National Vision 2030, with a focus on creating sustainable, healthy, and accessible environments for citizens and residents.

According to Assistant Director of the Public Parks Department Mohamed Abdullah Mohamed, the Ministry is working on upgrading several existing sites, including the former Doha Zoo, which will undergo significant redevelopment and be complemented by a new safari project near the Panda House in Al Khor.

Speaking to Qatar TV recently, he said that these initiatives form part of a long-term vision aimed at serving both current and future generations.

“The Ministry's strategy is closely aligned with Qatar's five-year plan, which is itself rooted in the goals of the National Vision 2030. The plan includes the creation of new recreational spaces, tourism-friendly locations, and both open and closed parks to enhance the quality of life across all regions of the country,” said Mohamed.

He said as Qatar continues to expand, particularly following major international events such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Expo 2023 Doha, the development of new residential parks and the beautification of cities with landscaped green areas have become essential components of urban planning.

“As part of the immediate rollout, two new parks, one in Al Thumama and another in Al Meearad, are set to open within the next week to ten days, with both names inspired by native Qatari plants. In the months ahead, the Ministry will also inaugurate three parks in Al Wakrah and another in Al Sailiya. This brings the total to five parks opening soon, while five additional parks are already under construction and progressing steadily,” said Mohamed.

Looking further ahead, he said, the Ministry's five-year plan includes the construction of around 20 new parks distributed across Qatar.

“Neighbourhood parks, typically ranging from 3,000 to 4,000 square metres, are being developed in nearly every new housing area to ensure that families have access to natural spaces for leisure, exercise, and outdoor activities. Site assessments are ongoing to determine which areas require immediate development and which can be scheduled for later stages,” said Mohamed.

The growing popularity of public parks reflects a shift in community culture, as more people turn to natural open spaces for walking, sports, and family outings.

Large parks such as Rawdat Al Hamama, Umm Al Seneem Park, and Rawdat Al Khail attract thousands of visitors, while recently renovated locations like Dahl Al Hamam Park have also seen a surge in footfall.

Beyond social and recreational benefits, green spaces play a critical environmental role by reducing carbon emissions, lowering pollution levels, and mitigating heat.

Parks like Al Bidda and Aspire Park are often three to four degrees cooler than surrounding areas, offering natural relief during warmer months. Mohamed emphasised that greenery also has a positive psychological effect, creating a sense of comfort and well-being for visitors.

With the country's continued urban expansion, Qatar remains committed to ensuring that every district has access to well-designed parks and open spaces.

“Our parks have become natural breathing spaces for families, and we are dedicated to enhancing comfort, well-being, and environmental quality for both citizens and residents,” Mohamed said.
