Turkey expresses condolences after Sri Lanka flood
(MENAFN) Türkiye has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life in Sri Lanka caused by floods and landslides linked to Cyclone Ditwah, according to reports.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the floods and landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “We extend our condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and to the people of Sri Lanka.”
Cyclone Ditwah, which struck the island on November 26, has affected 373,428 individuals from 102,877 families, with 43,925 people relocated to 488 emergency shelters, according to officials.
The disaster has claimed at least 123 lives, while 130 people remain missing due to widespread flooding and landslides. The severe weather, including heavy rainfall and rising floodwaters, has been impacting Sri Lanka since November 17.
Authorities have issued high-risk flood warnings for several major rivers, urging residents living downstream to evacuate immediately. In response, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has deployed over 20,000 military personnel to assist with rescue operations.
