Ethiopia Reports Rising Fatalities from Marburg Outbreak

(MENAFN) The number of fatalities linked to the Marburg virus disease outbreak in Ethiopia has climbed to six, according to an update issued on Wednesday by the nation’s Health Ministry.

In its announcement, the ministry noted that 73 potential cases had undergone testing through the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), while five individuals are still receiving medical care.

Authorities also revealed that 349 people identified as contacts had been traced, with 119 of them already completing their designated observation period.

The Africa CDC disclosed on November 15 that Ethiopia had formally verified its initial Marburg outbreak after diagnostic analyses confirmed the virus in the southern part of the country.

Health officials indicated that isolation facilities have been established within impacted zones, specialized medical personnel have been dispatched, and vital resources have been organized to enhance treatment efforts. Screening measures at airports, border posts, and other entry locations have also been intensified.

“Additionally, Ethiopia is working with countries that previously experienced Marburg outbreaks to exchange expertise, learn from their experience, and access treatments and vaccines,” the statement added.

Originally detected in 1967 during outbreaks in Germany and Serbia, the Marburg virus triggers an acute and highly contagious hemorrhagic illness comparable to Ebola.

Manifestations frequently include nausea, vomiting, throat discomfort, and sharp abdominal pain, with critical cases resulting in internal hemorrhaging and fatality.

The virus spreads through direct exposure to infected bodily fluids or tainted materials.
