WASHINGTON, Nov 23 (KUNA) -- The US and Ukraine have acknowledged that talks held in Geneva over the conflict in the European country were "highly productive" in narrowing the gaps, affirming any agreement must "fully uphold" Ukraine's sovereignty.
Negotiators from the US and Ukraine discussed an American peace proposal, and the talks were "constructive, focused and respectful," a statement by the White House said late Sunday, underscoring the shared commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace.
Both sides agreed the consultations were "highly productive," it added.
Discussions showed a meaningful progress toward aligning positions and identifying clear next steps, it said.
"They reaffirmed that any future agreement must fully uphold Ukraineآ's sovereignty and deliver a sustainable and just peace," noted the statement.
The parties, it said, drafted an updated and refined peace framework.
The Ukrainian delegation reaffirmed gratitude for steadfast commitment of the US, personally, President Donald Trump for their tireless efforts aimed at ending the war and the loss of life.
Ukraine and the US agreed to continue intensive work on joint proposals in the coming days. They will also remain in close contact with their European partners as the process advances.
The White House said final decisions under this framework would be made by the Presidents of Ukraine and the US, as both sides reiterated readiness to continue working together to secure a peace that ensures Ukraine's security, stability, and reconstruction.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in Geneva, affirmed that "a tremendous amount of progress" has been achieved, and described the talks as "the most fruitful talks" conducted over the past months.
He said the two sides managed to significantly narrow the outstanding points of disagreement though some issues still require continued work.
He stressed that negotiations were ongoing and that the announcement of an agreement is "very close." (end) amm
