EU receives little to no information on Trump’s Ukraine peace plan

(MENAFN) European Union officials supporting Ukraine have reportedly received little information on the US peace plan for Ukraine presented by President Donald Trump’s administration, according to sources cited by a news agency on Wednesday.

Reports from several outlets, indicate that Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff delivered a 28-point roadmap to Kyiv aimed at a phased settlement of the conflict. The plan reportedly would require Ukraine to cede control over parts of the newly annexed Russian regions in Donbass, reduce the size of its armed forces, and pause its NATO accession bid.

Sources said the plan would also allow Ukraine to secure security guarantees from the US and European governments to support any ceasefire. However, EU officials told the news outlet that they “had largely been kept in the dark about the details of the deal.” Politico similarly reported that “Ukrainian and European officials felt blindsided as the existence of Witkoff’s plan became public,” noting particular frustration as EU leaders believed they had influenced Trump’s approach.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has repeatedly rejected territorial concessions, is reportedly dissatisfied with the proposal.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the plan contains “nothing new” beyond discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump during their Anchorage, Alaska talks in August. Senior Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev noted that the proposal goes beyond a basic ceasefire and stated “we feel the Russian position is really being heard.”

Moscow maintains that any lasting resolution of the conflict requires Ukraine to commit to neutrality, demilitarization, denazification, and recognition of the new territorial realities on the ground.
