Trump inks bill forcing Justice Department to release Epstein files
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed legislation requiring the Justice Department to make public a collection of records connected to financier Jeffrey Epstein, one day after the bill won unanimous approval in the Senate, according to reports.
The measure comes after weeks of political disputes over how much of the material tied to Epstein should be released. Epstein, a convicted sex offender, died in a New York detention facility in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.
In an extended message posted on his Truth Social account, Trump described the bill as a step toward disclosing what he claimed were Epstein’s links to high-profile Democratic figures.
“Jeffrey Epstein, who was charged by the Trump Justice Department in 2019 (Not the Democrats!), was a lifelong Democrat, donated Thousands of Dollars to Democrat Politicians, and was deeply associated with many well-known Democrat figures,” he wrote, listing several individuals. He continued, “Perhaps the truth about these Democrats, and their associations with Jeffrey Epstein, will soon be revealed, because I HAVE JUST SIGNED THE BILL TO RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES!”
Trump said he had personally urged congressional leaders to push the bill forward and claimed that this request led to near-unanimous support. He also asserted that “at my direction, the Department of Justice has already turned over close to fifty thousand pages of documents to Congress.”
Under the new law, the Justice Department — led by Attorney General Pam Bondi — must release the records within 30 days, although authorities may withhold or redact sections that could interfere with ongoing federal investigations.
In his post, Trump contrasted his administration’s actions with those of his predecessor, asserting without evidence that “the Biden Administration did not turn over a SINGLE file or page related to Democrat Epstein, nor did they ever even speak about him.” He accused Democrats of using the “Epstein issue” to distract from what he described as his administration’s successes, listing policies ranging from tax cuts to border measures and economic initiatives.
Trump further wrote: “For years our Great Nation has had to endure RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, IMPEACHMENT HOAX #1, IMPEACHMENT HOAX #2, and many other Democrat created Witch Hunts and Scams,” adding that “this latest Hoax will backfire on the Democrats just as all of the rest have!”
Epstein’s case remains a deeply contentious topic in US politics, with lawmakers and advocates continuing to call for wide-ranging transparency about his associates and anyone who may have been involved in enabling his crimes.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing connected to Epstein. Their past social interactions, along with Epstein’s extensive connections to influential political, business, and academic figures, have sustained public pressure for the release of official documents.
