Irbid, Nov. 19 (Petra) – Farmers in Al-Koura district, in Irbid governorate, welcomed the recent heavy rains, which are expected to improve this year's olive harvest and enhance prospects for the upcoming agricultural season. The rainfall totaled nearly 47 millimeters across the district.
Farmer Mohammad Rashdan said the rains would help release the oil within the olives, increasing overall yield. Another farmer, Othman Bani Salameh, noted that the recent showers washed the trees and fruits, improving the quality of dry olives and facilitating extraction.
Farmer Moatasem Bani Hamad added that he had delayed harvesting to wait for the rainfall, which helped clean the trees and leaves, making picking and pruning easier.
Director of Al-Koura Agriculture Directorate Salem Khasawneh confirmed that the 43 mm of rain had a positive impact on olive trees across the district. He explained that the rainfall improves soil moisture and nourishes the trees during a critical stage of fruit development, contributing to evenly ripened, high-quality olives and enhancing oil flavor.
Khasawneh emphasized that the rain also helps accelerate fruit ripening and facilitates harvesting, as trees absorb water through their leaves, improving the texture and oil content of the fruit. He stressed the importance of monitoring the trees and taking preventive measures to protect the harvest from potential negative effects.
