Russia Curtails Poland’s Diplomatic Footprint After Consulate Shutdown
(MENAFN) Russia plans to curtail Poland’s diplomatic and consular operations on its territory after Warsaw ordered the shutdown of the Russian Consulate General in Gdansk, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Wednesday.
“As a reciprocal measure, the Russian side will reduce Poland’s diplomatic and consular presence in Russia,” Zakharova told a Russian news agency.
Earlier Wednesday, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirmed that Warsaw had closed the Gdansk mission — the final Russian consulate still functioning in Poland.
The Gdansk move follows earlier closures: Poland shut Russian consulates in Poznan and Krakow in late 2024 and mid-2025, alleging sabotage efforts “allegedly organized by Moscow.” Russia countered at the time by shutting Poland’s consulates in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.
Poland currently operates a single consulate general in Irkutsk, along with its embassy and consular division in Moscow.
Until this latest action, Russia maintained both its embassy in Warsaw and a consulate in Gdansk.
