Sudan Army Reports Major Advances Across Kordofan

(MENAFN) The Sudanese army reported significant advances across the Kordofan region on Tuesday following fresh clashes with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In a military statement, the army said its units conducted operations “with high efficiency,” dealing “heavy losses in personnel and equipment” to the RSF. The statement added that several “vital sites” had been secured and that forces were “redeployed according to a planned operational strategy.”

The army pledged to press on with its campaign against the RSF, vowing to continue “until the country is cleansed of rebellion and foreign agendas.”

Earlier on Tuesday, the Joint Force of Armed Movements, a coalition of armed groups allied with the army, announced it had regained control of the Abu Sunun and Abu Qaoud areas in North Kordofan state.

Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minnawi also confirmed that army forces and allied fighters had defeated the RSF in Jabal Abu Sunun and surrounding areas of North Kordofan.

The RSF, however, claimed that its fighters had successfully repelled an army assault in Jabal Abu Sunun, Jabal Issa, and Al-Ayyara, located west of the provincial capital, El-Obeid.

On Monday, the Sudanese army said it had reclaimed the Um Sayala area in northern North Kordofan from the RSF.

The escalation in Kordofan follows last month’s RSF seizure of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, which has prompted clashes to spread into new fronts across central and southern Sudan.

Currently, the RSF controls all five Darfur states, out of Sudan’s 18 states, while the army maintains control over most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum. While Darfur accounts for roughly one-fifth of Sudan’s territory, the majority of the country’s 50 million residents live in army-held areas.

Since the conflict erupted in April 2023, fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF has resulted in at least 40,000 deaths and displaced 12 million people, according to the World Health Organization.
