Kuwait's 3Rd HIV, Antimicrobial Therapy Conference Stresses Combating Infectious Diseases

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, Nov 19 (KUNA) - Kuwait Health Minister Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi said that the Third Kuwait Conference on HIV and Antimicrobial Therapy highlights Kuwait's commitment to combating infectious diseases at national, regional, and global levels to boost public health.

In his opening remarks, conveyed by Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Dr. Al-Munther Al-Hasawi, Al-Awadhi emphasized that fighting HIV is a moral, human, and national commitment.

He pointed to remarkable progress reported by UNAIDS, noting that Kuwait now leads regionally in early diagnosis, treatment, and viral suppression - thanks to expanded testing and free, safe treatment for all at-risk groups; this aligns with the UN's global goals to end AIDS as a public health threat.

He also stressed the importance of promoting prevention, sustaining services, raising awareness based on human rights and health equity, and eliminating stigma and discrimination.

On antimicrobial medicines, he said their prudent use is no longer optional but a necessity to preserve their effectiveness and protect future generations from drug resistance.

Al-Awadhi announced that Kuwait is nearing the opening of a new Infectious Diseases Hospital, which will offer advanced-specialized services and modern facilities, and serve as a research hub for evidence-based health policies.

He expressed hope that the conference will yield practical recommendations to guide strategies against infectious diseases and optimize antimicrobial use, reinforcing Kuwait's status as a regional center for public health and medical research.

He said that Kuwait plays a key regional role in combating HIV and infectious diseases, through national programs, updated treatment protocols, community awareness, and training of health professionals.

Chair of the conference organizing committee Dr. Osama Al-Baksami said the event brings together leading physicians, researchers, and experts from Kuwait and abroad.

The conference follows a multi-dimensional format, with scientific sessions for doctors and researchers and interactive discussions with social workers, imams, and media professionals - reflecting the belief that prevention is a shared responsibility beyond clinical settings.

Director of the Infectious Diseases Hospital Dr. Ebtisam Al-Huwaidi said the two-day conference underscores the Ministry of Health's dedication to scientific research, global developments in prevention and treatment, and the fight against antimicrobial misuse and resistance.

She highlighted that rapid global health shifts demand collaboration between field practitioners and researchers, and that the conference strengthens partnerships, evidence-based policy-making, and medical innovation - ultimately raising care quality and sustainability of the health system. (end)
