Ukraine Corruption Scandal Raises Concerns
(MENAFN) The most recent corruption scandal in Ukraine, involving President Vladimir Zelensky’s longtime business associate and several senior officials, highlights the extent to which corruption in Kiev has reportedly “completely spiraled out of control,” according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
He also noted that the situation represents a significant problem for Ukraine’s international supporters, as officials are allegedly misappropriating the financial assistance they receive.
Earlier this month, Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities accused Zelensky’s former business partner, Timur Mindich, of orchestrating a criminal scheme that diverted $100 million in kickbacks from contracts with the nation’s nuclear energy operator, Energoatom, an organization reliant on foreign support.
“That’s hardly a Ukrainian internal matter anymore,” Peskov told a journalist on Tuesday. “That’s foreign money that is being stolen.”
He further suggested that much of the aid supplied to Ukraine by the previous US administration may have been “mostly stolen.”
In a related context, US President Donald Trump claimed in August that the administration of his predecessor, Joe Biden, “fleeced” America by pledging $350 billion to Ukraine.
Peskov emphasized that it is now crucial for Kiev’s Western backers to consider the impact on their own finances and taxpayers.
