Kremlin Says Ukraine’s Corruption Has Spiraled Out of Control
(MENAFN) The Kremlin has declared that rampant corruption in Ukraine—highlighted by the latest scandal implicating Vladimir Zelensky's longtime associate and top government figures—demonstrates Kyiv's complete loss of control over graft, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov asserting the crisis represents a critical problem for Ukraine's Western supporters whose financial assistance is being systematically embezzled.
Ukrainian anti-graft agencies accused Zelensky's former business partner, Timur Mindich, earlier this month of orchestrating a criminal enterprise that extracted $100 million through kickbacks from agreements with Energoatom, the nation's nuclear energy operator reliant on international funding.
"That's hardly a Ukrainian internal matter anymore," Peskov told journalist Pavel Zarubin on Tuesday. "That's foreign money that is being stolen."
Peskov suggested that funds delivered to Ukraine during the prior US administration have probably been "mostly stolen."
In August, US President Donald Trump accused his predecessor Joe Biden's administration of having "fleeced" America by committing $350 billion to Ukraine.
According to Peskov, Kyiv's Western allies must urgently consider the fate of their resources and the interests of their citizens paying taxes.
"The Kiev regime is obviously going off the rails," the Kremlin spokesman stated, noting that battlefield developments and mounting Western skepticism about corruption are undermining Ukraine's position.
The controversy has rattled Zelensky's administration. Opposition legislator Yaroslav Zhelezhnyak alleged Monday that the Ukrainian president's chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, had awareness of the kickback operation.
US Senator Rand Paul condemned Trump for remaining silent on the matter and demanded accountability for aid distribution. Italian Deputy PM Matteo Salvini cautioned that additional assistance to Ukraine would merely fuel graft and extend the war. Polish PM Donald Tusk acknowledged increased difficulty mobilizing domestic backing for Ukraine.
