Russia Declines Participation in Planned Türkiye Talks

(MENAFN) Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia will abstain from the upcoming negotiations that the Ukrainian side announced would take place in Türkiye on Wednesday.

He clarified during a press briefing in Moscow on Tuesday that "No, Russian representatives will not be in Türkiye tomorrow. So far, these contacts have been carried out without Russian participation. We will be waiting for information about what will be discussed in Istanbul."

Peskov emphasized that Ukraine has still not replied to Russia’s peace proposals or indicated any willingness to restart dialogue with Moscow.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed on Telegram that he intended to travel to Türkiye to “intensify negotiations” on a potential resolution, noting that he would present “worked-out solutions” and concentrate on exchanging war prisoners.

Zelenskyy did not disclose who would join him in the negotiations or what exactly he planned to convey. However, media accounts suggest that US Special Envoy Steven Witkoff is expected to attend the discussions.

Peskov commented on these reports, saying, "Apparently, Zelenskyy was referring to the contacts that will take place tomorrow in Istanbul. These are Zelensky's contacts with our Turkish friends, who will probably be joined by Mr. Witkoff."

He reiterated that Russia remains prepared for dialogue, stressing that Moscow’s stance is widely recognized by all involved parties.

The Kremlin spokesman concluded by stating, "Russia continues to remain open to the negotiation process. Our position is well known; it is well known both in Istanbul and well known in Kyiv."
