US House Representatives support bill to release Epstein files

(MENAFN) The US House of Representatives has voted by a wide margin to require the Department of Justice to make all unclassified documents on the late financier Jeffrey Epstein publicly available, according to reports.

The measure gained decisive momentum after President Donald Trump dropped his opposition on Monday, urging Republican members to support the effort.

Epstein, a convicted sex offender, died in a Manhattan detention facility in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. His long-standing connections to prominent figures across politics, business, and entertainment have continued to fuel partisan disputes in Washington, with both major parties accusing the other of exploiting the scandal.

The House approved the resolution in a 427–1 vote, after 218 members signed on to advance it. With Republicans narrowly controlling the chamber, the proposal now moves to the Senate for its next stage of consideration. The Senate’s majority leader has so far declined to indicate how the chamber will proceed.

The measure still permits the Justice Department to withhold any information that could “jeopardize an active federal investigation or ongoing prosecution.”

In a post on Monday, Trump announced on social media that “the House Oversight Committee can have whatever they are legally entitled to, I DON’T CARE!” He also insisted that “we have nothing to hide.”

Trump had previously resisted such disclosures for several months, arguing that political opponents were overstating the case to hurt his presidency and distract from other national issues. Even in his latest comments, he labeled the matter the “Epstein hoax.”

During his election campaign, Trump pledged to make Epstein-related documents public and later signed an executive order instructing officials to do so. Several rounds of records have been released over time, including around 20,000 documents published in November.
However, critical information — such as passenger lists, contact books, and names of potential associates — remains sealed, prompting ongoing speculation about who could be implicated. Earlier this month, Democratic lawmakers released an email in which Epstein claimed that Trump “knew about the girls.” Trump then ordered an inquiry into Epstein’s interactions with high-profile Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton.
