Costa Ricans Choose Local Tourism For Their End-Of-Year Vacations
December is the month to share with our loved ones and take a break to end the year. For 2025, Costa Ricans' travel preferences show a desire to enjoy time with family, with many seeking domestic destinations for their vacations.
According to Airbnb's internal data for late 2025 and early 2026, in Costa Rica, 50% of all domestic searches on Airbnb are made by groups, and almost 30% by families, demonstrating the interest of Costa Ricans in enjoying vacations within the country and boosting local tourism.
In terms of reservations, almost half of the groups plan to stay between 2 and 6 nights, while among families, this percentage reaches 40% for stays of the same duration.
“At Airbnb, we are committed to promoting more inclusive and sustainable tourism. We are happy to see how more and more Costa Ricans are choosing to explore new regions of our own country, thus helping to diversify the tourism economy and allowing more communities to benefit from local tourism,” said Carlos Muñoz, Director of Public Policy for Airbnb Central America and the Caribbean.
The trend for the end of the year is for Costa Ricans to travel in groups or with their families. Older adults are also looking to celebrate the end and beginning of the year by taking vacations, according to Airbnb's internal data. Of the percentage of searches corresponding to Ticos over 60, almost 40% are considering local tourism. Older adults opt for shorter vacations, with more than 45% seeking stays of less than a week.
