Germany to resume providing weapons to Israel
(MENAFN) Germany has announced that it will lift its restrictions on arms exports to Israel, with deliveries set to resume on November 24, a government spokesperson confirmed on Monday.
The suspension had been imposed in August following Israel’s announcement of plans to occupy Gaza City during its military operation against Hamas. Deputy government spokesman Sebastian Hille explained that the situation has since stabilized, citing a US-backed ceasefire in effect since October 10. He declined to comment on whether Germany would reinstate restrictions if conditions change.
Hille also avoided discussing whether any Israeli orders were canceled or delayed while the restrictions were active. When asked about potential violations of the ceasefire or international law by Israel, he said the government is monitoring developments closely and remains “in constant dialogue with the parties involved,” but currently has no information on any breaches.
His remarks followed controversial statements by Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who claimed that the Palestinian people have never existed, describing the nation as “an invention without any historical, archaeological, or factual basis.” Separately, reports indicated that the Israeli military may have directed Palestinian civilians into Hamas tunnels that could have been rigged with explosives during its Gaza operations.
Israel welcomed Germany’s decision, with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar urging other countries to follow suit in a post on X. However, the move faced criticism domestically, with Lea Reisner, the Left party’s spokesperson for international relations, calling it “fatal and completely irresponsible.”
