Debates Take Place Within MAGA Movement About Removing Radical Activists - Atlantic Council Expert

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Adrian Karatnycky, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council stated this in an interview with Ukrinfor.

He noted that a "small radical, isolationist, nativist, sometimes racist and antisemitic wing" had formed within MAGA.

According to Karatnycky, "Trump and MAGA are debating whether these extreme voices should be pushed out. This includes political commentators Tucker Carlson, Nick Fuentes, and to some extent former Trump senior counselor Steve Bannon, who make more rational actors uncomfortable."

Commenting on the situation around Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, known for her anti-Ukrainian statements, Karatnycky stated that she "was considered very radical but seems to be moving toward a more normal, less conspiratorial style. The President sees this as disloyalty."

He added that the current tension within the movement was not a deep problem but could intensify in the future if Trump's ratings begin to fall. In that case, some Republicans, especially in purple states (where both Republicans and Democrats win), might take a more moderate position.

Karatnycky suggested that under such circumstances "Congress may play a more active role rather than rubber-stamping the President."

Assessing the results of the latest local elections in the United States, including the victory of left-wing populist Zohran Mamdani in the New York mayoral race, Karatnycky stressed that they indicate radicalization in both of the largest American parties.

He noted that "the first party moving to the center will likely win the next presidential election." According to him, Americans want "Americans want normal, calm government, with some principled positions, but centered politically."

Karatnycky explained that Mamdani's success was partly a reaction to Trump's policies and partly to the sharp increase in immigration in New York, including a doubling of the Muslim population over the past decade to around 750,000. He pointed out that the motivation of Mamdani's supporters, as well as far-left voters in general, had been extremely high.

At the same time, he noted that "not all elections followed this extreme path": in Virginia and New Jersey, centrist Democratic candidates won the gubernatorial races.
