Oxford Union Members Vote Israel Poses Bigger Threat Than Iran

(MENAFN) The Oxford Union, recognized globally as one of the premier debating societies, has voted “overwhelmingly” to approve a motion asserting that Israel represents a greater danger to regional stability than Iran.

The vote followed a spirited discussion featuring former Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh and Hillel Neuer, director of the Geneva-based NGO UN Watch.

The central focus of the debate was the motion declaring Israel a bigger threat to the region than Iran. According to a media outlet, members of the society supported the proposal by a substantial margin over the weekend.

In support of the motion, Shtayyeh argued that Israel’s conduct is the principal source of instability in the Middle East, labeling it “an expansionist colonial state established by colonial powers.”

He further described Israel as a “pariah state” that “acts above the law,” claiming it violates UN resolutions while enforcing “a colonial regime based on apartheid against the Palestinian people.”

Shtayyeh also accused Israel of perpetuating “brutal occupation, crimes and genocide, … Israel is dragging the region into repeated conflicts,” and noted that some Israeli legislators advocate for borders stretching “from the Nile to the Euphrates.”

Concluding his argument, he stated, “We all should say that Israel is the biggest cause of destabilization in the region.”

Challenging the motion, Neuer maintained that Israel does not destabilize the Middle East and instead pointed to Iran’s support for armed proxies across the region as the main source of unrest.
