US attack on vessel in Eastern Pacific kills three people

(MENAFN) A US operation in the Eastern Pacific resulted in the deaths of three individuals believed to be involved in drug trafficking, according to military statements issued Sunday.

"On Nov. 15 (Saturday), at the direction of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization," US Southern Command said on the social media platform X, using an alternative designation for the defense secretary.

US intelligence determined the targeted boat "was involved in illicit narcotics smuggling, transiting along a known narco-trafficking route, and carrying narcotics," according to the statement.

"Three male narco-terrorists aboard the vessel were killed," the command added, noting the strike took place in international waters.

The operation marks another step in Washington’s ongoing effort to dismantle drug-related networks under the Trump administration’s intensified counter-narcotics strategy.

On his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed an order labeling multiple cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, a move that expanded the legal authorities governing US operations.

Military actions tied to suspected drug trafficking began in September with the targeting of a Venezuelan speedboat in the Caribbean, later extending into the Eastern Pacific by late October. Since the campaign’s launch, at least 21 strikes have taken place, leaving 82 people dead, according to reports.
