Egypt FM Urges Immediate Ceasefire In Sudan For Sustainable Political Process
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
CAIRO, Nov 16 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Sunday underlined the importance of an "immediate" ceasefire in Sudan as a prerequisite for launching a sustainable political process that preserves the unity of the Sudanese state and its institutions.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Abdelatty's phone discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov focused on bilateral relations, regional and international issues of mutual concern, as well as developments in the Gaza Strip.
Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's ongoing efforts to consolidate the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Agreement, stressing the need to advance the implementation of all elements of the plan announced during the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, which provides a practical path toward the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
He also highlighted preparations for the upcoming Cairo International Conference on Early Recovery and Reconstruction in Gaza in support of the Palestinian people.
According to the statement, the talks also addressed consultations on a draft UN Security Council resolution regarding developments in Gaza and related security arrangements.
Abdelatty emphasized the importance of ensuring that the resolution reinforces the ceasefire and creates conditions for achieving a just and comprehensive peace that meets the aspirations of the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination and statehood.
The discussions touched on the Iranian nuclear file, with both ministers exchanging views on ways to reduce regional tensions and support diplomatic solutions.
Abdelatty stressed the importance of continued cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency and building confidence among concerned parties to pave the way for a comprehensive settlement.
On bilateral relations, the two officials reviewed the trajectory of Egypt-Russia ties, expressing pride in the historical friendship between the two countries and the continued development across various fields. (end)
