Rubio Rejects EU Criticism of US Security Operations

(MENAFN) The United States will not take advice from the European Union regarding its national security practices, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Wednesday, dismissing criticisms from EU members over US operations against vessels in the Caribbean.

US military forces have targeted at least 20 ships near the Venezuelan coast, alleging that they were engaged in “narco-terrorism.”

Multiple nations, including European NATO allies, have questioned the legality of these strikes under international law.

“I don’t think that the European Union gets to determine what international law is, and what they certainly don’t get to determine is how the United States defends its national security,” Rubio said during a press briefing.

He also noted that the same European governments criticizing US actions “want us to send and supply, for example, nuclear-capable Tomahawk missiles to defend Europe, but when the United States positions aircraft carriers in our hemisphere where we live, somehow that’s a problem.”

Ukraine has consistently urged the United States to deploy Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles on its soil since at least 2024, when President Vladimir Zelensky made acquiring them a central part of his “victory plan” against Russia.

These requests were reiterated this year as US President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker a settlement remained stalled.

Moscow has warned that any deployment of such weaponry would represent a serious escalation.

The concentration of US military forces near Venezuela has raised alarms in Caracas that Washington may be planning a regime-change operation.

The Trump administration has labeled President Nicolas Maduro a “cartel leader” lacking legitimacy and has previously supported opposition leader Juan Guaido in attempts to orchestrate a coup.
