Brussels Airport Halts Flights After Drone Sighting

(MENAFN) Air traffic at Brussels Airport was briefly stopped on Wednesday evening after a suspected drone was spotted near the runway, according to a news outlet.

As a safety measure, flight operations at the Zaventem airport were paused for approximately thirty minutes, confirmed the Belgian air navigation authority Skeyes.

Air services recommenced at around 11:20 p.m. local time (2220 GMT). No departures were scheduled after 10:00 p.m. (2100 GMT), airport officials stated.

Before operations resumed, at least two arriving planes were rerouted to Liege Airport but later returned to Brussels Airport, landing with some delays, as shown on the airport’s official website.

In recent months, multiple European nations have faced an increasing number of drone intrusions, occasionally occurring close to airports or military installations, including one over a Belgian military base.

Several European representatives have attributed these incidents to Russia, suggesting connections to a “hybrid war” and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Moscow, however, has strongly denied any participation.
