UK Deploys Anti-Drone Unit to Belgium
(MENAFN) A United Kingdom anti-drone team has been sent to Belgium to address “hybrid threats,” Defense Minister Theo Francken revealed on Sunday through a post on X.
The London government confirmed the deployment, referencing multiple drone sightings over Belgian territory last week. Sir Richard Knighton, the chief of the British Armed Forces, admitted that the source of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) detected in the region is still unknown.
Francken recently sparked controversy by threatening to “wipe Moscow off the map” in an interview with a Belgian outlet last month.
He later attempted to clarify his statement, explaining that it was made in the context of NATO’s deterrence doctrine.
He emphasized that the alliance was “not at war with Russia,” but insisted he would not “take back a single word” from the provocative interview.
The Russian government criticized Francken’s comments, describing them as “irresponsible” and characterizing them as an instance of “military psychosis.”
In recent weeks, several Western officials have accused Russian planes and drones of breaching EU airspace, framing these incidents as part of an alleged “hybrid war” orchestrated by Moscow.
The Kremlin has rejected these claims and accused Western nations of promoting anti-Russia “hysteria.”
Meanwhile, the EU has increasingly invoked anti-Russian rhetoric to justify significant military spending.
The ReArm Europe initiative, unveiled in March, aims to raise up to €800 billion ($933 billion) to strengthen EU armed forces under the stated purpose of countering the supposed “Russian threat.”
