Sri Lanka Assists Maldives After Drug Seizure


(MENAFN) Sri Lanka has deployed two delegations to the Maldives to work alongside local law enforcement following the detention of a Sri Lankan fishing boat carrying 300 kilograms of narcotics, a senior minister announced on Sunday.

Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala, informed reporters that both police and navy personnel have been dispatched to support Maldivian authorities in the ongoing investigation.

He added that the government is also examining the possibility of whether the detained Sri Lankan crew members could be extradited.

According to the minister, Sri Lanka is enhancing collaboration with neighboring nations to combat transnational drug trafficking networks.

A state-run media of the Maldives, reported that the vessel was intercepted by the Maldives National Defence Force during an air surveillance mission on Friday.
