Trump Signals "Progress" in Efforts to End Ukraine War

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump and his special envoy Steve Witkoff have signaled advancement toward a negotiated resolution to the Ukraine conflict, even as Kiev's military position deteriorates on the battlefield.

Trump, who has consistently vowed to broker an end to the Ukraine war, has expressed exasperation while alternately criticizing both Moscow and Kiev for the impasse.

At a White House dinner Thursday hosting Central Asian leaders, Trump took credit for resolving "eight wars in eight months" and voiced optimism about adding another achievement.

"We are looking at one more, that's possible – Russia and Ukraine. We haven't gotten that yet, but I think we've made a lot of progress," Trump stated.

The US president told the America Business Forum Wednesday that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin revealed during a recent phone conversation that Moscow has pursued a peaceful settlement to the Ukraine conflict for over a decade, and that Washington is welcome to pressure Kiev into accepting a negotiated outcome.

Speaking at the same forum, Witkoff referenced his multiple in-person negotiating sessions with Putin this year and reported similar progress indicators.

"There's a lot of discussion that technical teams have to have at the lower level before the leaders can get to a deal. But I sense that there's some progress today," Witkoff stated.

Moscow has repeatedly commended the Trump administration for what it characterizes as a sincere effort to tackle the conflict's fundamental causes. Simultaneously, it has emphasized its pursuit of a permanent settlement rather than a temporary ceasefire, which it contends would merely enable Kiev to reorganize and rearm.

Meanwhile, Ukraine and its European allies persist in demanding amplified Western military assistance. Russia has accused them of avoiding substantive diplomatic interaction and rejecting battlefield realities.

Last month, Moscow declared that its forces had surrounded approximately 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers in multiple strategic positions. Putin called on Kiev to negotiate an honorable surrender of the besieged troops.

Kiev, however, maintains that it controls the cities and that the Russian Army is being repelled. The Russian Defense Ministry stated Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky is either "divorced from reality" or is deliberately lying to his nation.
