Ovechkin Makes NHL History with 900th Goal
(MENAFN) Alexander Ovechkin reached a historic milestone on Wednesday evening by becoming the first player in NHL history to net 900 goals in regular-season play.
The celebration was accompanied by an unusual incident when the opposing goalie seemed to try to claim the commemorative puck for himself.
The record-breaking goal occurred at 2:39 of the second period during the Washington Capitals’ home matchup against the St. Louis Blues.
Ovechkin intercepted a clearing attempt from Blues goalie Jordan Binnington and deftly backhanded the puck into the net.
Immediately following the goal, footage captured Binnington lunging for the puck and seemingly attempting to conceal it in his pants.
A linesman apparently instructed him to hand it back, and the peculiar scene quickly spread across social media.
Ovechkin’s celebration was quintessentially his own: the 40-year-old veteran raised his arms, glided toward the bench, and was swarmed by his teammates.
This monumental accomplishment further solidifies his legacy and underscores his reputation as the greatest goal-scorer in NHL history.
The Capitals’ captain already holds the record for the most regular-season goals, having surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing total of 894 last season.
Yet, Ovechkin is still pursuing Gretzky’s combined total of regular-season and playoff goals, which stands at 1,016.
Following Wednesday’s milestone, Ovechkin has reached 977 and requires 40 more to surpass Gretzky’s career tally.
