Typhoon Kalmaegi Claims Lives in Philippines
(MENAFN) The number of fatalities caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines has climbed to 114, while 127 individuals remain unaccounted for, an official confirmed on Thursday.
According to Diego Mariano, deputy spokesperson for the Office of Civil Defense, a total of 82 people sustained injuries in Central Visayas — the region most severely impacted — a news agency reported.
The intense storm, locally referred to as “Typhoon Tino,” ripped off rooftops, uprooted trees and electric poles, and triggered extensive flooding throughout several communities.
Although Kalmaegi left Philippine territory early Thursday morning, the country’s weather bureau noted that it continues to produce rainfall across sections of Luzon and the Mindanao region.
Over half a million residents have been forced to flee their homes, with more than 1.4 million individuals affected across Central Visayas, including portions of Cebu province.
Authorities stated that landslides and heavy floods have severed road access in isolated locations, while some towns have suffered from widespread power disruptions.
The destruction follows a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Cebu on Sept. 30, resulting in numerous casualties and displacing thousands of people.
Officials said that humanitarian operations are still underway as rescue units strive to reach distant communities cut off by landslides and floodwaters.
