Britain’s Wealthiest Patriarch Passes Away at 85
(MENAFN) Gopichand P. Hinduja, head of Britain’s richest family, died on Tuesday at the age of 85 after a prolonged illness.
Known widely as GP, he served as chairman of Hinduja Group, a sprawling Indian conglomerate with interests spanning finance, media and entertainment, and oil. His immediate relatives said in a statement, “He will leave a deep hole at the heart of our family.”
Hinduja is recognized for transforming his father’s modest textile and trading ventures into a global conglomerate that today includes more than 25 companies across a dozen sectors. Under his leadership, Times of India noted, the group evolved from a Middle East-focused trader into a diversified powerhouse after acquiring Gulf Oil in 1984.
In 1987, Hinduja Group made a major investment in Ashok Leyland, India’s second-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, by purchasing Land Rover Leyland International Holdings (LRLIH) from British carmaker Rover Group.
The second of four brothers steering the family business for decades, Gopichand took over as chairman following the death of his elder brother Srichand in May 2023. The Hinduja siblings, including Prakash and Ashok, were among Britain’s most prominent ethnically Indian business families.
The family also owns significant London real estate, including multiple large residences near St. James’s Park and the recently refurbished Old War Office in Whitehall, now partially converted into a hotel. GP and his family topped the latest Sunday Times Rich List with a net worth of £35.3 billion and ranked 11th on Forbes’s 2024 list of India’s 100 richest businesspeople.
He is survived by his wife, Sunita, sons Sanjay and Dheeraj, and daughter, Rita.
