AI Platform Gets Sued Over Child Safety Risks in Texas
(MENAFN) The rising use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots among children has ignited increasing worry across the United States.
A Texas family has initiated a federal lawsuit against Character.AI, claiming that the company’s chatbot played a role in their autistic son’s self-harm and aggressive behavior, according to reports from media outlets on Sunday.
Character.AI, recognized as one of the leading platforms in this domain, recently implemented a new rule preventing users under the age of 18 from engaging with its chatbots, as reported by a news agency.
The company referred to the policy as a “bold step forward” to safeguard teenagers and other vulnerable individuals.
Despite this measure, parents Mandi and Josh Furniss argue that it arrived too late to prevent harm. According to the lawsuit and comments made to the news outlet, their previously joyful son began to withdraw from family interactions in 2023 after receiving a mobile phone.
Over time, his conduct reportedly became increasingly troubling and unpredictable, ultimately leading to threats of self-harm and violent actions. “When I saw the (chatbot) conversations, my first reaction was there’s a pedophile that’s come after my son,” Mandi Furniss told the news agency.
The lawsuit includes screenshots showing AI-generated characters using sexualized and violent language. Character.AI has chosen not to provide any comments regarding the ongoing litigation.
