The prolonged closure of the Torkham border between Pakistan and Afghanistan has left hundreds of Pakistani medical students studying in Afghanistan distressed and uncertain about their future.

The students fear that if the border is not reopened soon, they will miss their classes and examinations, resulting in the loss of an academic year and jeopardizing their careers.

According to affected students, many are enrolled in various medical universities across Afghanistan, particularly in Jalalabad, Kabul, and Kandahar. Gul Shad Afridi, one of the students studying in Afghanistan, said that due to the border closure, he has been unable to attend classes or sit for exams. He explained that he had returned to Pakistan during the holidays but is now unable to go back.

Parents of the stranded students expressed deep concern, saying they have already spent substantial amounts-running into hundreds of thousands of rupees-on their children's education. They warned that the continued closure of the border has put both their financial investment and their children's academic progress at risk. The parents urged the government of Pakistan to issue special travel permits for students so that they can continue their education without further disruption.

Analysts note that the impact of the border tensions is no longer confined to trade alone but is increasingly affecting education, healthcare, and social ties between the two neighboring countries. Experts have called on both governments to adopt a humanitarian approach and facilitate the movement of students, emphasizing that the future of the younger generation must not become a casualty of political or security disputes.
