Peru Cuts Diplomatic Ties With Mexico Over Asylum Granted To Former Peruvian Prime Minister

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Peru announced that it is severing diplomatic relations with Mexico after the latter granted asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez.

Peruvian Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela said in a press statement,“Given this unfriendly act, the Peruvian government has decided to sever diplomatic relations with Mexico as of today,” following the Mexican embassy's decision to offer refuge to Betssy Chávez in Lima.

Chávez was appointed Prime Minister of Peru in November 2022 during the administration of former President Pedro Castillo but resigned just days later amid a severe political crisis in the country.

She faces criminal charges for her alleged involvement in Castillo's attempt to dissolve Congress in December of the same year-an act the judiciary ruled unconstitutional.
