Matt Mclain

Matt works with collaborative partners in the School of Education for academic programmes, as well as research and scholarship projects. In recent years, he has worked with organisations in Cyprus (Κύπρος), the United Arab Emirates (الإمارات العربية المتحدة), Ireland (Éire), Malaysia (Malaysia/مليسيا), and Japan (日本), as well as visiting other countries including Kuwait (الكويت), Sweden (Sverige), China (中国), Peru (Perú) and Eqypt (مصر) to explore potential partnerships and knowledge exchange. His current academic and research interests include digital education and society, teacher education and development, and design and technology education.
Matt is an experienced teacher educator, having previously taught design and technology (D&T) in secondary schools for 12 years. He is passionate about all things learning, teaching and assessment! As an academic, Matt has experience in educational leadership and management, as well as working as a senior lecturer, educating the next generations of teachers, as excellent practitioners, valuing social inclusion, collaboration, leadership and research.
Matt is also an active member and Trustee of the D&T Association. As a curriculum influencer, he was involved with the redrafting of the National Curriculum (2014), advising on non-statutory guidance for the DfE's D&T Expert Group for the new programmes of study and on the future of the subject. He has also advised on and contributed to the development of the 2017 GCSE and A/AS Level Subject Criteria for design and technology as a drafter for the DfE.
Matt has been research active for over a decade and completed his PhD by Published Work in 2022, which focused on demonstration as a signature pedagogy in D&T. His other professional and research interests include subject knowledge development, curriculum design and philosophy of technology. He has recently been using a variety of qualitative and quantitative methodologies and methods in his research, including Q Methodology and systematic literature review, adopting a philosophical perspective influenced by Pragmatism.
