NITI Aayog Moots Tech-Driven Agriculture Roadmap To Boost Productivity, Sustainability & Farmer Incomes
The roadmap proposes leveraging advanced technologies-including climate-resilient seeds, digital twins, precision agriculture, agentic AI and modern mechanisation-to enhance productivity, improve sustainability and raise farmer incomes.
It segments agricultural stakeholders into aspiring, transitioning and advanced farmer categories and presents tailored interventions recognising the distinct needs of smallholders and commercial cultivators.
Speaking at the launch, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel said,“Gujarat is uniquely positioned to lead India's agricultural transformation. Through initiatives such as the Digital Crop Survey, Digital Agri Farm Registry, and the i-Khedut portal, we are building a seamless ecosystem that integrates technology across every stage of farming.”
These tools, he added, are enabling farmers to tackle crop diseases, boost yields and adopt next-generation inputs while making farming more cost-efficient.
NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam stressed,“No two farmers in India are the same, and technology must reflect that diversity. The real impact of frontier technologies will come from how well we customise solutions-whether for a smallholder or a commercial cultivator; a farmer growing staples or a horticulturist.”
“This roadmap rightly emphasises differentiated strategies for aspiring, transitioning, and advanced farmers. If we design with empathy and deploy with precision, technology can truly transform livelihoods, making agriculture more resilient, inclusive, and future-ready.” he added.
Developed with support from BCG, Google and CII, the roadmap aims to strengthen rural prosperity, bolster India's competitiveness in agri-tech and contribute to the ambitious vision of a developed Viksit Bharat by 2047.
