Denmark Dispatches F-35s to Join NATO's "Arctic Sentry" Mission

(MENAFN) In a historic military move, Denmark has dispatched a squadron of F-35 stealth fighters to participate in NATO's "Arctic Sentry" operation, officials announced Friday, representing the Nordic nation's inaugural operational commitment to the alliance's expanding Arctic defense strategy.

The Danish Ministry of Defence confirmed the deployment involves four advanced combat aircraft that will execute joint tactical maneuvers alongside Sweden's Gripen fighter fleet, according to official statements. Local reports corroborate the four-aircraft deployment figure.

Troels Lund Poulsen, Denmark's defense chief, hailed the milestone mission—launched at Copenhagen's initiative—as proof of operational readiness in the High North. "The first Danish contribution to the activity shows that we are ready to deliver concretely and operationally to NATO in the Arctic," he said.

The minister emphasized that injecting F-35 capabilities into the region amplifies NATO's footprint while cementing Denmark's position as a pivotal Arctic and North Atlantic partner.

NATO's "Arctic Sentry" serves as an operational umbrella encompassing multiple northern security programs: the Danish-commanded "Arctic Shield" Home Guard exercise, "Arctic Summer" featuring the elite Sirius Sledge Patrol, and "Brilliant Ice," an aerial refueling logistics operation over Greenland. The framework aims to project sustained alliance vigilance across Arctic territories.

Vivian Motzfeldt, Greenland's foreign affairs and research minister, praised the F-35 deployment as a security watershed. "It is a new and strong capability that we have not seen much of in Greenland, but which will undoubtedly contribute to strengthening security and surveillance in our region," she said.
