Iraq Pledges Solidarity with Türkiye in Talks with PKK
(MENAFN) Iraq's top diplomat has pledged solidarity with Türkiye as negotiations continue with the PKK/YPG militant organization aimed at achieving regional stability.
Fuad Hussein, Iraq's Foreign Minister, declared his nation's backing during a joint media briefing alongside Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, as reported by a state broadcaster.
"Iraq supports dialogue between Türkiye and the PKK and hopes for a solution that satisfies all sides," Hussein stated.
The PKK—designated a terrorist entity by Türkiye, the US, and the EU—held a congress in May announcing its disbandment, responding to a February appeal from detained leader Abdullah Ocalan to cease their multi-decade armed campaign.
On October 26, the militant organization declared its withdrawal from Turkish territory.
Characterizing Baghdad-Ankara relations as "historic," Hussein revealed that his talks with Fidan centered on water resource management, "which represents a vital and mutual interest for both countries."
The Iraqi diplomat disclosed that both nations have established 26 memoranda of understanding spanning multiple sectors, with a framework agreement on shared water resource governance set for signing within hours.
Türkiye and Iraq maintain profound historical and cultural connections, reinforced through the 2009 High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, with commercial exchange serving as a cornerstone of their partnership.
