Erdogan says OIC launched special program to support Syria

(MENAFN) A new initiative to assist Syria has been launched under the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), according to recent reports. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the program on Monday, emphasizing that the unity and backing of the Islamic world are vital for safeguarding Syria’s political cohesion and territorial integrity.

"Through this program, which will contribute to strengthening human and institutional capacity, we will provide project support to Syria in areas such as training, expert exchange, needs analysis, and feasibility studies," Erdogan said during the 41st COMCEC Ministerial Meeting held in Istanbul.

He noted that for almost 14 years, Syrians had endured immense suffering, with nearly one million people killed in assaults by the Baath regime and various militant groups. "Millions were forced to migrate, including 3.6 million to Türkiye. Throughout this process, we hosted Syrian refugees with a sense of hospitality," he said, describing Türkiye’s long-standing commitment to helping displaced Syrians.

Erdogan stated that Türkiye had sought to act with solidarity and compassion toward its neighbors. "Praise be to Allah, the oppressed Syrians finally achieved victory," he stressed.

He further remarked that the violence which had engulfed Syria for more than a decade had come to a close with the Dec. 8 revolution, paving the way for national renewal under the leadership of Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara.

Highlighting Ankara’s ongoing support, Erdogan said Türkiye continues to assist Syria in multiple sectors, including transport, education, security, trade, healthcare, and social services.

"The support of our organization and the Islamic world is extremely important in ensuring the political unity and territorial integrity of the country and the lasting prosperity of our Syrian brothers and sisters," he stated.

He concluded by underscoring the broader regional benefits of collaboration: "Syria's integration with regional economies will bring tangible benefits to both Syria and our region."
