Russia Confirms Surveillance of Escalating Tensions in Venezuela
(MENAFN) Moscow confirmed it maintains vigilant surveillance of escalating tensions in Venezuela following explosive revelations that President Nicolas Maduro allegedly solicited advanced military hardware from Russian leader Vladimir Putin, including radar systems, aviation assets, and potential missile technology.
Internal US government intelligence documents, exclusively obtained by The Washington Post, disclosed Friday that Maduro directly approached Putin via correspondence requesting "defensive radars, aircraft repairs and potentially missiles" slated for delivery during a high-level diplomatic mission to Moscow conducted by a senior Venezuelan official last month.
The leaked communications further revealed Maduro's outreach extended to Chinese President Xi Jinping, with classified documentation indicating Caracas pursued "expanded military cooperation" with Beijing specifically designed to neutralize "the escalation between the US and Venezuela," according to the intelligence files reviewed by the publication.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged Sunday morning through Russian state outlet Tass that authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance regarding Venezuelan developments, confirming ongoing diplomatic channels remain active between the nations due to existing bilateral defense agreements.
"We are watching very closely what is happening in Venezuela," Peskov stated, emphasizing Moscow's commitment to regional stability. "Of course, we want everything to remain peaceful and for no new conflicts to arise in the region. The world is already full of conflicts. New conflicts are not needed," he declared while addressing mounting US-Venezuelan hostilities.
Washington has executed over a dozen military operations since September targeting vessels departing Venezuelan territorial waters, operations officially characterized as counter-narcotics enforcement that have resulted in at least 61 confirmed fatalities. US authorities have yet to publicly release substantiating evidence supporting drug-trafficking allegations, while Maduro's administration has categorically dismissed the accusations as unfounded.
The diplomatic maneuvering underscores deepening geopolitical fractures as Venezuela seeks security guarantees from Moscow and Beijing amid intensifying American military pressure in the region, raising concerns about potential proxy confrontations and arms proliferation in Latin America's increasingly contested strategic landscape.
