Team India's long-awaited dream has finally come true as they clinched their maiden Women's ODI World Cup triumph by defeating South Africa in the high-stakes title clash at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2. India fulfilled their dream of winning the coveted trophy in their third World Cup final appearance following heartbreaking losses in the 2005 and 2017 finals.

After posting a total of 298/7, thanks to Shafali Verma's record-breaking 87-run knock and vital contributions from Deepti Sharma (58) and Richa Ghosh, the Women in Blue bundled out the Proteas for 246 in 45.3 overs, despite Laura Wolvdaart's brilliant century knock that kept South Africa in the hunt for a while.

India's bowling attack, led by Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma, displayed discipline and grit, complemented by sharp fielding efforts that derailed South Africa's chase, ultimately guiding India to a historic victory and their first-ever Women's ODI World Cup crown.

India Bowlers Delivered Under Pressure

The Indian bowling attack has well complemented the effort of Indian batters, who had set up a formidable total with composed partnerships and timely acceleration. Under pressure, the bowlers held their nerves, executing precise plans and turning crucial moments in India's favour to seal a memorable triumph. Shafali Verma,  Deepti Sharma, and Shree Charani put South Africa on the back foot by reducing them to 148/5 in 29.3 overs.

However, South Africa witnessed a hope through a 61-run stand for the sixth wicket between Laura Wolvdaart and Annerie Dercksen (35) before the latter was dismissed by Deepti Sharma, a much-needed breakthrough to tilt the momentum in India's favour.  The partnership put the Proteas in contention for a brief period, rekindling the hopes of a comeback before India's bowlers regained control with disciplined spells.

Deepti Sharma and Shree Charani kept their composure in the crucial final phase, with Renuka Singh Thakur complementing their effort with a disciplined spell, conceding just 28 in 8 overs. With Laura Wolvdaart at the crease, Indian bowlers maintained relentless pressure through tight lines and smart field placements, denying her any crucial boundaries that would leave the momentum hanging in the balance.

Laura Wolvdaart was a serious threat to Indian bowler as she was a lone warrior for the Proteas, and all the hopes were on her after carrying the chase single-handedly after the top and middle order collapsed.

The Catch That Confirmed India's Win

Laura Wolvdaart posed a serious threat to the Indian bowling attack, and her wicket was crucial for the Women in Blue to regainmomentum. There came a moment when the South African skipper lofted one high to deep mid-wicket off Deepti Sharma's delivery in the 42nd over of the Proteas run chase, and Amanjot Kaur held a spectacular juggling catch to dismiss her for 101.

The catch by Amanjot Kaur brought a big sigh of relief not only to Team India but also to the supporters at the packed DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Thereafter, Deepti Sharma got rid of Tyron Chloe for 9 at 221/8. After Tyron's dismissal, Ayabonga Khaka joined Nadine de Klerk, who was also a threat to Indian bowlers, given her match-winning performance against the Women in Blue in the league stage. In the 45th over, South Africa was under pressure again when Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma inflicted a run out on Khaka at 246/8.

Nadine de Klerk was still at the crease and carrying hopes of chasing down the target. The South African all-rounder attempted to conjure a late surge but was caught by Harmanpreet Kaur off Deepti Sharma's delivery, confirming India's long-awaited Women's World Cup title win.
