Two Suspects Formally Charged In Daring Louvre Jewel Heist Investigation
French prosecutors said on Saturday that a man and a woman have been placed under formal investigation on suspicion of organized jewelry theft from the Louvre Museum. Both suspects, currently in custody, have denied any involvement in the high-profile robbery that stunned France earlier this month.
The Paris prosecutor's office said the 37-year-old man faces charges of organized theft and criminal conspiracy, while the 38-year-old woman is accused of aiding and abetting the crime. Three other people arrested earlier in connection with the case were later released without charge.
Local media reported that the female suspect is from La Courneuve, a working-class suburb in northern Paris, while prosecutors declined to reveal further details about the identities of the accused.
Earlier, authorities confirmed that two other men had previously confessed“partially” to their role in the theft. One of them, a 34-year-old Algerian national living in France since 2010, was arrested at an airport while trying to board a flight to Algeria.
The second man, aged 39, was already under judicial supervision for a prior theft case and lived in Aubervilliers, another low-income district north of Paris.
With the formal opening of proceedings against the two new suspects, the total number of individuals under investigation in the Louvre jewel heist has risen to four.
No trace of the stolen royal jewelry has yet been found. The daring burglary, carried out by masked thieves using a freight elevator and escaping on scooters, has prompted renewed scrutiny of security at the world's most-visited museum.
