Police says several people were stabbed on UK train
(MENAFN) Several people were stabbed on a train near Cambridge, central England, on Saturday, with police detaining two suspects at the scene.
Emergency services, including ambulances and armed units, were dispatched around 7:40 p.m. local time. “Armed officers attended and the train was stopped at Huntingdon, where two men were arrested. A number of people have been taken to hospital,” Cambridgeshire Police said.
Authorities later confirmed that ten individuals were hospitalized, nine of them with life-threatening injuries. British Transport Police initially issued a terrorism alert, which was subsequently lifted. Chief Superintendent Chris Casey stated that it would “not be appropriate” to speculate on the motive at this stage.
Social media videos showed a heavy police presence at the train station, while a witness described seeing “extremely bloodied” passengers fleeing and one shouting, “They’ve got a knife.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the “appalling incident” and expressed gratitude to emergency responders, writing, “My thoughts are with all those affected” on X. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she was “deeply saddened” and urged the public to “avoid comment and speculation at this early stage.”
