Xi Commends Trump for Global Peace Initiatives
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping praised U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday for his peace-promoting endeavors during their encounter in the South Korean harbor city of Busan.
"You care a lot about world peace, and you're very enthusiastic about settling various regional hotspot issues. I appreciate your great contribution to the recent conclusion of the Gaza ceasefire agreement," Xi expressed to Trump.
The Chinese leader further emphasized Trump’s involvement in brokering a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, which was signed on Sunday following deadly border skirmishes between the two Southeast Asian nations earlier in July.
This meeting represented the first direct engagement in six years between the heads of the globe’s two largest economies. Their last in-person dialogue occurred in June 2019 at the G20 Summit held in Osaka, Japan.
"The world today is confronted with many tough problems. China and the US can jointly shoulder our responsibility as major countries and work together to accomplish more great and concrete things for the good of our two countries and the whole world," Xi told Trump.
"Given our different national conditions, we do not always see eye to eye with each other, and it is normal for the two leading economies of the world to have frictions now and then," the Chinese president remarked.
Xi also recognized that the Chinese and American trade delegations—who have convened multiple times, including most recently in Malaysia over the weekend—had achieved "encouraging progress" toward building a "solid foundation, sound atmosphere" for ongoing bilateral negotiations.
