Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said he has come not for an election campaign in Peshawar but to defend the supremacy of the judiciary.“I saw a report yesterday that I am coming here for elections, but elections will keep happening, I am here to protect the judiciary and uphold the constitution,” he said.

Addressing the gathering, Afridi said he had come to speak out against the injustices being committed against them.“The judiciary was crippled by the 26th constitutional amendment,” he said, adding that he assumed office through an electoral mandate, not at anyone's behest.

He said he had written to the Punjab government seeking a meeting with the founder and had requested a meeting with the prime minister while present outside Adiala Jail, but a constable had allegedly thrown the orders of three judges into a dustbin. Afridi cited examples including Chief Justice Waqar Seth and Arshad Sharif as proof that obstacles have been placed in the path of justice.

The chief minister urged judges who feel their orders are being ignored to come to them instead of writing letters, promising that lawyers would stand with them.“Lawyers have led movements before and will do so again,” he said.

Afridi said steps are underway to establish a uniform education system in the province so that children of the rich and poor can receive the same education, and efforts are being made to maintain law and order.

He said draft laws will be prepared after seeking suggestions from bar associations and lawyers' organizations.“We are making laws so that if innocent civilians are killed in security-force operations, action will also be taken,” he added.

Sohail Afridi vowed to continue the struggle with lawyers for an independent judiciary, restoration of the media, and the supremacy of the constitution and rule of law.
