Profile Articles Activity

I'm a professor of environmental history at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. I bridge the sciences and humanities to write stories about the past that can guide responses to today's most urgent challenges. I'm the author of The Frigid Golden Age (Cambridge University Press, 2018) and Ripples on the Cosmic Ocean (Belknap Press/Viking, 2025). I publish equally in major scientific and historical journals, and write for popular audiences in, for example, the Washington Post, Aeon, and The Conversation. I also maintain popular online resources; check out The Climate Chronicles podcast, for example, if you want to learn more about the history of climate change.
