(MENAFN) Tesla’s sales in the European Union fell sharply in September, dropping 18.6% year-on-year, according to industry reports. The US electric vehicle maker sold 25,656 units last month in the EU, down from 31,535 in September 2024, with its market share slipping to 2.9% from 3.9% over the same period.

Across Europe—including the EU, the European Free Trade Association, and the UK—Tesla’s sales also declined 10.5% year-on-year, totaling 39,837 units in September. Over the first nine months of 2025, Tesla’s sales tumbled 38.7% compared to the same period last year, reaching 111,328 units.

Meanwhile, battery-electric car sales in the EU surged 20% in September to 167,586 units, highlighting the broader market growth despite Tesla’s decline.

Chinese competitor BYD recorded a dramatic increase, with EU sales jumping 272% year-on-year to 13,221 units in September. Its market share also rose to 1.5% from just 0.4% in the same month of 2024.

Tesla’s waning performance in Europe has been attributed to growing competition from Chinese brands, as well as backlash against Elon Musk’s political interventions and controversial stances in the region.
