Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Rattles Western Türkiye

(MENAFN) A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake rattled the Sindirgi district in western Türkiye’s Balikesir province late Monday, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The tremor struck at 10:48 p.m. local time (1948 GMT), AFAD confirmed.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan extended his well wishes to those affected, noting that AFAD and other agencies are actively conducting field inspections and closely monitoring the situation.

The quake, which occurred at a depth of 5.99 kilometers (3.72 miles), was felt across neighboring provinces, including Istanbul.

“AFAD and other relevant institutions have begun field inspections, and reports are being carefully reviewed,” Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told media that no casualties had been reported, with only two minor injuries resulting from panic.

He added that crews were working to restore electricity following power outages in the region.

The minister noted that three unused buildings and a two-story shop damaged in a previous earthquake had collapsed, emphasizing that no one was living in the structures.
