EU Automobile Sales Climb 10 Percent in September
(MENAFN) European Union automobile registrations climbed 10% year-over-year in September, totaling 888,672 newly registered vehicles, fresh data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association revealed Tuesday.
Across the broader European region—encompassing EU member states, the European Free Trade Association, and the UK—fresh vehicle purchases jumped 10.7% compared to the prior year, hitting 1.23 million units during the identical timeframe.
Spain spearheaded growth among the EU's largest automotive markets with a 16.4% year-over-year surge, while Germany followed at 12.8% and Italy posted a 4.2% uptick.
Battery-electric automobiles emerged as the primary catalyst behind EU market expansion. BEV purchases skyrocketed 20% annually in September, capturing 167,586 units and representing 18.9% of all fresh car transactions. Spain witnessed an explosive 59.7% BEV sales spike, as Germany and France registered increases of 31.9% and 11.2%, respectively.
Hybrid-electric automobiles strengthened their market leadership, commanding 34.7% of EU sales in September. HEV registrations advanced 15.9% to reach 308,037 units.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle demand demonstrated substantial momentum, with purchases soaring 65.4% to 91,148 units.
Conversely, conventional combustion engine vehicles experienced steep deterioration. Petrol automobile registrations plummeted 7.8%, with market penetration shrinking to 24.9%.
Simultaneously, diesel vehicle registrations tumbled 14.3%, compressing their market presence to merely 8.1% in September. Double-digit percentage declines materialized throughout most EU territories.
