KFAED Contributes USD 5 Mln To UNICEF's Response To Cholera Outbreak In Sudan

WASHINGTON, Oct 27 (KUNA) -- The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed on Monday, an agreement with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), under which the Fund will provide UNICEF USD 5 million to support its Cholera Response Project in Sudan.
In a press statement, the KFAED that the agreement was by Kuwait's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Jarrah Al-Sabah and UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell in New York.
According to the fund, the project aims to limit the spread of cholera and reduce health risks resulting from deteriorating water and sanitation services. It will focus on improving access to clean water, rehabilitating 12 water treatment plants and 18 small water points, upgrading hospitals sanitation systems, and providing solar energy systems to ensure sustainability.
The project will also promote hygiene awareness and behavioral change through community campaigns and field team training for cholera outbreak response.
The statement noted that the project comes within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed on July 6 between the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, Kuwait Foreign Ministry and the Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to provide joint assistance in financing UNICEF's work to support primary healthcare, nutrition, water and sanitation, and essential child protection services in Sudan.
Under this memorandum, the United Kingdom and Kuwait, through the Kuwait Fund, will each contribute USD 5 million, to finance the project, which is expected to directly serve around 1.5 million people in Sudan.
This grant represents the tenth contribution of its kind between the two institutions in the field of humanitarian support. Since 2017, the Kuwait Fund has provided approximately USD 23.5 million to UNICEF to finance nine humanitarian projects, the most recent of which was on March 20, aimed at supporting the overhauling of water and sanitation systems in the Gaza Strip, with a grant of USD 1.5 million.
