EU Rejects Israeli Occupation's Sovereignty Over Occupied Palestinian Territories
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
BRUSSELS, Oct 27 (KUNA) -- The European Union reiterated on Monday its rejection of the Israeli occupation's sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank, affirming that annexation is "illegal" under international law.
EU Commission Spokesman Anouar El Anouni told reporters at the Union's headquarters in Brussels that the European Union maintains its longstanding position of non-recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the territories occupied since June 1967, in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
He added that annexation is "illegal under international law" stressing that any such measures represent a blatant violation of international law and United Nations resolutions.
El Anouni explained that the "unacceptable situation" in the Gaza Strip, along with the recent measures in the West Bank, seriously undermine the prospects of reaching the two-state solution, which the EU views as the only viable framework for achieving lasting peace.
Regarding the latest advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), El Anouni noted that while such opinions are "not legally binding", the Israeli occupation should nevertheless "comply with them in view of its clear international obligations". (end)
